Views from the Abyss #8: Micro-aggressions

Product of a particularly flaky branch of social theory, and a good example of where blaming the victim is an entirely appropriate response. The phenomena described as a 'micro-aggression' manifests when people have failed to claim candid and honest ownership of their identities.

When you own your own identity, it cannot be used to hurt you.

Q. You don't look very Japanese.

A. I'm aware of this whole 'we are all one race, the human race' kunbaya group hug poppycock, but this observation remains entirely valid to anybody with a functioning set of eyes.

Q. You speak Japanese very well.

A. I also cook a mean lasagne.

Q. Wow! You can read kanji!

A. Yes, but it's so easy to forget how to write them when you're using computers and mobile phones every day.

Q. Can you eat Japanese food?

A. Are you offering to cook?

Micro-aggressions my arse.
